DAY WITHOUT ART poster2013

During this AIDS Awareness Week (November 24 – December 1, 2013) we asked several North Bay art galleries and tattoo studios to take part in A Day Without Art. In the early 1980s, at the outset of the AIDS epidemic, arts communities were extremely hard hit by the disease. New York and San Francisco saw hundreds of area artists, from every artistic vocation, die from the ravages of HIV/AIDS. A group of New York artists proposed a way to remember their late arts community comrades by closing art galleries or cloaking pieces of artwork in black for a day. That day became an annual event known as Day Without Art, which coincides with World AIDS Day every December 1.

For the past three years, ACNBA has encouraged local art galleries and tattoo studios to participate in Day Without Art. Here’s a collection of what they came up with.
