Viral hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver caused by a virus. It is estimated that over 600,000 Canadians are affected by it although many, up to 25%, are unaware of their status. About 1 in 12 people worldwide has viral hepatitis. 1.4 million lives are lost to the disease each year. The disturbing aspect of hepatitis C is that there are no symptoms until the person’s liver has reached a state of serious damage. While there is still no vaccine to prevent hepatitis C there is a cure. The AIDS Committee of North Bay & Area will be holding a range of events over Hepatitis C Awareness Week around the North Bay area. Find the schedule here.
